When one refers to the knowledge systems that are of this land be it Indian Knowledge Systems or Bharatiya gyan parampara, then one has to understand what '''‘I’''' in IKS stands for, it can be Indian, Indic or Indigenous. Indian, deals with geographical territory, The land of Bharat and everything related to Bharatvarsh her Culture, Civilization, literature, people,  their festivals and everything that comprises the Hindu civilization. There is another term called Indic studies which comes from linguistics where you see the connection of vernacular languages with the mother language which is Sanskrit. Further, when one Discusses Indigenous it pertains to the Vanavasi native traditions and Governance and that of the folk and local ethos of India.

When we discuss '''‘K’''' in IKS it is Knowledge which can be expressed on three levels Jñāna, Vidñāna, and Prājñāna. Jñāna here is pure knowledge whereas vidya is acquired knowledge. Vidñāna is the application of knowledge in the best possible way, knowledge when seen through the lens of rationality, reason, and prudence it is Vidñāna. When we see knowledge from a spiritual and Ātmanubhūti it becomes Prājñāna.

'''‘S’''' Systems is akin to Shastra as it is pre-established and has come down from tradition. It is systematised knowledge classified into structures or categories as follows.

'''Shruti:  '''

Vedic Corpus which is ritual in nature or philosophical. Four Vedas and attached with their Brāhmaṇa, followed by  Āraṇyaka, its consecutive Upaniṣad.

'''Vedanga:'''

Vedārtha aṅgyate gamyate iti vedāṅgaḥ "That through which the meaning of the Vedas is reached or understood is called a Vedāṅga."

The Vedāṅgas, literally meaning "limbs of the Veda," are a group of six ancillary disciplines in Vedic culture that developed in ancient India. These disciplines are essential for understanding and correctly interpreting the Vedas, the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism. Each Vedāṅga serves a specific purpose in Vedic studies:

'''1. Śikṣā (Phonetics):''' It deals with pronunciation and accent. Śikṣā lays down rules for the correct pronunciation of Vedic texts, which is considered crucial for preserving their sanctity and efficacy 72 siksa granthas in existence.

'''2. Kalpa (Ritual):''' This discipline provides detailed instructions and guidelines for conducting Vedic rituals and ceremonies. The Kalpa Sūtras are texts that include rules for rituals, ceremonies, and legal matters in four divisions shautra sutra, Grihya sutra(16 samskaras), and Dharma sutras(Dharma and its workings).

'''3. Vyākaraṇa (Grammar):''' Vyākaraṇa is the study of grammar and linguistic analysis. It is essential for understanding the Vedic texts correctly. Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī is the most famous work in this field.

'''4. Nirukta (Etymology):''' This discipline is concerned with explaining difficult Vedic words. It is a sort of ancient linguistic study that helps in understanding the meaning of Vedic hymns and mantras by analysing their roots and derivations.

'''5. Chandas (Meter):''' Chandas refers to the study of the Vedic metre. This aspect of the Vedāṅgas deals with the poetic metres used in the composition of the hymns. Understanding Chandas is important for both the composition and recitation of Vedic texts.

'''6. Jyotiṣa (Astronomy/Astrology):''' Jyotiṣa is the study of astronomy and astrology. It deals with the auspicious timings for performing Vedic rituals and also includes astrological predictions.

Together, the Vedāṅgas play a critical role in preserving the oral tradition of the Vedas and ensuring that their recitation and application are done accurately and effectively. They represent an early scientific and systematic approach to the study of language, ritual, and timekeeping in the Vedic tradition.

'''Upaveda'''

Upaveda, in the context of Vedic literature, refers to a category of texts considered as secondary or auxiliary to the main Vedas. The term "Upaveda" literally translates to "applied knowledge" or "secondary Veda". There are traditionally four recognized Upavedas, each associated with a main Veda, and they deal with more practical aspects of knowledge and living. The four Upavedas are

Āyurveda: Associated with the Rigveda, Āyurveda is the science of life and health. It's an ancient Indian system of medicine and holistic healing that includes diet, herbal remedies, exercise, yoga, meditation, and other aspects of health and lifestyle.

Dhanurveda: Linked to the Yajurveda, Dhanurveda deals with the science of warfare and martial arts. It encompasses not only physical techniques and strategies but also mental and spiritual aspects of warfare.

Gāndharvaveda: Corresponding to the Samaveda, Gāndharvaveda is the science of music and arts. It covers a wide range of topics related to music, dance, drama, and other performing arts, seen as ways to achieve spiritual and emotional expression.

Arthashastra or Sthāpatyaveda: Often associated with the Atharvaveda, this Upaveda deals with the science of architecture, sculpture, and construction. However, some traditions consider Arthashastra (the science of politics and economics, famously represented by Kautilya's treatise) as the fourth Upaveda.

'''In addition to the Caturdasa-vidyas, other knowledge systems play a crucial role in the broader spectrum of IKS:'''

Upāṅgas: These six auxiliary texts (Nyāya, Vaisheshika, Sāṃkhya, Yoga, Mimāṃsā, Vedānta) offer philosophical and logical insights that complement the primary scriptures.

Āgamas: These scriptures provide detailed guidelines for worship, temple rituals, and spiritual practices, bridging the gap between abstract philosophical teachings and practical devotion.

'''Upāṅga'''

They are hermeneutical the do’s and don't it's an axiological literature. This includes Mahabharat and Ramayana along with 18 Puranas, along with various Smriti granthas like Manusmriti, and Yadnyavalka Smriti.

The term "Upāṅga" can be translated as "secondary limb" or "subsidiary part." In the broader context of Hindu philosophy and religious practice, the Upāṅgas are important texts that provide additional insights and instructions, complementing the teachings found in the primary scriptures.

Traditionally, there are six Upāṅgas, each serving a specific purpose in enhancing the understanding of the Vedic and post-Vedic scriptures:

# '''Nyāya (Logic and Epistemology):''' Nyāya is the study of logic, reasoning, and epistemology. It provides a framework for philosophical debates and discussions, helping to discern valid reasoning and knowledge.
# '''Vaisheshika (Atomic Theory and Metaphysics):''' Vaisheshika deals with metaphysics, particularly focusing on categories of being and the nature of the universe. It proposes an atomic theory of the physical world.
# '''Sāṃkhya (Enumeration or Theory of Numbers):''' Sāṃkhya is a philosophical system that explains the universe in terms of puruṣa (consciousness) and prakṛti (matter), along with enumerating various principles and elements of existence.
# '''Yoga (Discipline or Practice):''' Yoga, as an Upāṅga, refers to the philosophical and practical aspects of Yoga as expounded in key texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It's about spiritual discipline, meditation, and practices for mind-body integration.
# '''Mimāṃsā (Ritual Exegesis):''' Mimāṃsā is primarily concerned with the interpretation of the Vedic rituals and the philosophy of action. It emphasises the efficacy of Vedic rites and rituals.
# '''Vedānta (End or Conclusion of the Vedas):''' Vedānta represents the philosophical teachings found at the end of the Vedas, particularly the Upanishads. It deals with concepts like Brahman (ultimate reality), Ātman (self), and the nature of existence.

'''Agama’s'''

Āgamas are a set of scriptures that form an integral part of Hindu religious literature. They are primarily concerned with the practical aspects of worship, temple rituals, and spiritual practices, as opposed to the more philosophical focus of the Vedas. The Āgamas provide detailed guidelines on various aspects of devotion, including the construction of temples, the iconography of deities, rituals, festivals, and methods of worship.

There are three main branches of Āgamas, each associated with a major Hindu deity and a corresponding spiritual tradition:

'''1. Śaiva Āgamas:''' These texts pertain to the worship of Lord Shiva and form the scriptural basis for Śaivism. They detail various aspects of temple construction, rituals, and ceremonies dedicated to Shiva, along with philosophical doctrines and yoga practices. Some well-known Śaiva Āgamas include the Kamika, Kalottara, and the Suprabhedāgama.

'''2. Vaiṣṇava Āgamas:''' These scriptures guide the worship of Lord Vishnu and are central to Vaiṣṇava tradition. They encompass temple rituals, festivals, daily worship practices, and the creation of sacred images of Vishnu and His avatars. The Pañcarātra and Vaikhānasa Āgamas are two major groups within this category.

'''3. Śākta Āgamas:''' These focus on the worship of the Divine Mother, Shakti or Devi, in various forms. They form the scriptural foundation of Śāktism. The Śākta Āgamas include texts like the Kālikā Purāṇa and Devī-Bhāgavata Purāṇa, which describe the rituals, ceremonies, and philosophical underpinnings of Devi worship.

The Āgamas, along with the Nigamas (which generally refer to the Vedas), constitute a comprehensive spiritual and ritualistic framework for Hindu religious practice. They offer a more theistic and devotional complement to the more abstract and philosophical teachings found in the Vedas and Upanishads, addressing the needs of those who are more inclined towards ritual and personal deity worship.

The Indian Knowledge Systems, through the lens of Caturdaśa-vidyās and complementary texts like Upāṅgas and Āgamas, offer a holistic and profound understanding of knowledge that transcends mere academic learning. They integrate the spiritual, intellectual, and practical aspects of life, creating a well-rounded approach to education and wisdom. These systems not only preserve the ancient traditions of Bharat but also provide a robust framework for contemporary application, ensuring that the rich heritage of Indian knowledge continues to inspire and guide future generations.
